Do you know that providing college education to your children is the most important investment of a parent? Being a professional is an asset of a person that can never be shared nor can be stealing out from you. And aside college degree is the basic foundation to earn for a descent living to a high paying job. Today, unemployment is getting higher worldwide so your educational attainment is very important to match this global competition in modern technology that are most establishment where using.

The biggest and most perplexing financial challenge many families face is how to provide for college for the kids. It differs from other challenges both in size (it’s one of the biggest) and character (it’s much more complex).

College is such a large expense that you need to get it into your financial planning as early as possible. As with other large expenditure, you want to spread your saving task over as many years as you can. You can benefit from the elapsed time to marshal the power of compound interest and equity appreciation. That’s especially important in coping with the fact that college costs seem persistently to raise faster than inflation.

The tax techniques that used to help a little, chiefly by putting money in the future student’s name, have largely been eliminated by the Tax Reform Act of 1986. Still, you should explore tax implications with whoever provides your tax and investment advice.

How Can I Afford College Education

You also have a decision to make about the decision process itself: how you want the child to participate in the decision, and how early. That’s partly a financial matter, but it’s broader than that. If these numbers seem staggering, don’t let them be. Try to make decisions today about education tomorrow that will be respectful to you and what you feel is possible. This is where your inner voice will come into play.

In some families, it’s made clear very early that decisions about vacations, Christmas gifts, and home improvements are all conditioned by the college fund. Birthday checks from grandmother go there. So do earnings from summer jobs.

Beyond the effect this practice can have in making funds available for college, it can significantly shape the child’s attitudes toward money generally and toward education. That can be character building and a good learning experience. It can also create resentment and unrealistic expectations about what effects the education will ultimately have. A college education does not inevitably produce a higher income and a better station in life, no matter what dad told you.

When a child approaches college age, there are other issues of participation. As your children get involved in picking school, they need to understand clearly from you what the financial options are. Early on, you’ll want a full discussion of the role they are to play in paying part of the costs. If you expect their savings to help pay the first year’s tuition, and they’re thinking of quite a different use for it (quite possibly beach-oriented), there’s a potential for conflict. You’ll also want to be sure you’re together in your expectations regarding part-time work, summer jobs, or work-study programs. You might want o make the student responsible for researching financial aid. That’s major assignment that can help make participation in the decision process meaningful.

It’s also good to clarify some other expectations ahead of time. Some kids get a car for college graduation. If you have no intention of making such a gift, say so. Go on record early with your intentions regarding postgraduate expenses, too. It’s common for parent to say: We pay undergraduate expenses; you pay everything beyond. That’s not an arbitrary distinction. After graduation, the student may be able to get aid not available before, because the student’s income, not yours. Is the basis for determining financial need? If the student realizes how much good grades affect the chances of a fellowship or other financial help in graduate school, which can be an additional incentive to perform well as an undergraduate.
