Healthy Family
Is your family healthy or unhealthy? Good question. In fact, it’s one we parent should ask ourselves on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it’s a question we generally prefer to avoid. Instead, we both take it for granted that our families are thriving or stick our heads in the sand and ignore the signs that they aren’t.
Even if we were willing to ask the questions, we have no systematic means of obtaining an answer. We have ways to assess the health of individuals and corporations and whole societies but virtually none to assess the health families and not – contrary to the macho myth – a few rugged individuals, which built this nation. It’s time we started paying attention to the role that sound, stable families play in a viable society. Here’s I’ve notice that healthy ones share certain characteristics.

Happy Family
Remember your marriage vows? "for better . . . for worse  . . . in sickness . . . and in health . . . to love and to cherish . . ." A wedding anniversary is a good time to talk over your marriage, and to consider how well things are working out. We go for check-ups with our dentist or doctor, so that through wise, preventive, measures we can ensure good physical health. An occasional marriage check-up, taken seriously, prayerfully and intelligently, will help to maintain good emotional health in our marriage.

Happy Family
You can teach yourself to be happy. On one occasion the Lord Jesus epitomized the whole matter when He said, "It is more blessed (happy) to give than to receive." What He taught was, that joy in the Christian life (and in any life) is to be found on the side of being unselfish. When we make giving, helping, serving, the motto of our lives we find a basic joy that nothing else will bring.

How could one adopt this philosophy? It isn't difficult. Just turn your natural inclinations inside out. In place of seeking goods, services, gifts for yourself, try to do the opposite. Make it a rule to do things for other, especially in your own home.
