You’ll need a good sense of humor, an outrageous costume, a silly wig, a red nose, a funny name like Blinky, Twinkles or Lolly Pop and lots of patience in dealing with kids. Weekend birthday parties are non-stop year-round. If you can jungle three into an afternoon, you can rack up some decent money.

Clowning can be self-taught with the help of a few books and trial and error. Or you can look for a course given either at an adult education center or a local college.

It pays to be funny. At $40 per hour, be sure to include your travel time, make-up application time and the actual time at the party. That means each affair can net you from $70 to $150. Throw in a few bucks for party favors or treats and you’ve made a good profit. If you have a few magical tricks up your sleeve, factor that in for a higher hourly rate.
