“If you’re creative and detail-oriented, you can be a success as a bridal consultant,” says the President of the Association of Bridal Consultants here in my country. “All you need is persistence and patience.”

There is a wide range of services you may be asked to perform-from ordering invitations to arranging the honeymoon.

Or you may only be asked to keep everyone on time on the wedding day (don’t underestimate this seemingly simple task). To carve a unique niche for yourself, you may specialize in outdoor ceremonies or theme weddings. As for fees, bridal consultants are entitled to between 10% and 15% of whatever part of the wedding you participated in. So if you asked to order flowers, arrange for a band and a photographer and the total cost comes to $3,500. Alternately, you can charge $40 to $60 an hour and keep track of the number of hours you spend planning and supervising the affair, but most people prefer to be told a flat, upfront fee.

To get started, contact bridal shops, flowers shops and photographers. Offer to do one free for a friend, just to get experience, then let word of mouth do the rest. Having business cards to hand out wouldn’t hurt.
