Water Filter
Home water treatment is a burgeoning industry, and many of the products can improve specific problems. There are several types of water-treatment units, and no single device can solve all water problems.
  • Physical filters.  These units use fabrics, fiber, ceramics, or other types of screens to remove particles, grit, sediment, dirt, and rust from the water. Some ultra-fine filters can also remove some bacteria from the water, although they should not be used to treat micro-biologically unsafe water.

New Water Filter
Water quality varies from place to place, so you should have your water tested to see what impurities it contains. The results will help you decide whether you actually need a filter and what type to get. Note that it can cost more than $100 to test for a range of contaminants.

Chlorine and lead are the two most common problems. Chlorine is a powerful oxidizing agent that can cause birth defects, cancer, and heart disease. As for lead, even very small amounts can be harmful, especially to young children. Lead poisoning causes organ damage and stunts the nervous system, producing mental retardation.
