 Stroke Not smoking is the best way to protect yourself against stroke. You can also reduce your risk with diet and exercise.
- Limit cholesterol and fat. A diet high in cholesterol and fat, especially saturated fat, may promote buildup of plaque by increasing the amount of fat and cholesterol in your blood. Limit the total amount of meat, poultry or fish you eat to five to seven ounces daily. Eat only lean cuts of red meat. Choose dairy products made with skim or low fat milk. Limit eggs to four a week. Use polyunsaturated oils (such as corn, sun flower or soybeans) or monounsaturated oils (such as canola, olive or peanut). Avoid lard and solid shortenings.
