Salvation actually involves a commitment on our part to follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly. It should result in a genuine change in the direction of our lives. Let me illustrates.
When two people marry, they commit themselves to love, protect, and respect each other “for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health . . .” Note that after they make their lives. Before, they each lived separate lives, pleasing themselves. Now, they commit their live to each other, to share life – so there is a change in focus.

As Christians, we are married to Jesus Christ. Before we become Christians we followed our own desires,. Living life as we pleased – but this life was actually controlled by Satan and our sinful nature. “What we want to do, we don’t do, but what we hate, we do” (Romans 7:15). We may have wanted to get out of our bondage, but we could not overcome the power of sin. We were cut off from God. But because God loves us, Jesus Christ paid the death penalty for our sin, dying in our place. When we confessed our sins and accepted what He did for us, we reconciled to God (Colossians 1:21-23)
By receiving Jesus Christ into our lives, we commit ourselves to follow Him unconditionally (Mark 8:34-35). In other words, we accept Him not only as Savior, but also as Lord and Master.
Jesus as Savior and Jesus as Lord are but two sides of one coin. We cannot have one without the other. Romans 10:9 are explicit: “If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Who is Jesus Christ and why do we surrender our lives to Him?
- He is God. He is our Creator. For this fact alone, He deserves our total allegiance (Colossians 1:16).
- Wonder of wonders – He wants us to be with Him and enjoy His company (John 15-13-15).
- He loves us so much He gave His own life to pay for the penalty of our sins! (Romans 5:8). We respond to His love by loving Him.
- The peace and joy that He gives us, no one else can give (John 14:27)
- He actually wants to transform us, so that we can become more and more like Him (Philippians 3:21)
Sometimes, we may agree that to be a Christian, we should let Jesus Christ be the Lord of our life. But then we need to integrate and practice this knowledge in our everyday living. Being born again or being a Christian does not mean talking about Christ, but being more like Him. It is more than a frenetic acquisition of head knowledge about Christ and the faith; rather, it is a melting down of this knowledge in the heart, so it can be applied.
For us to see how the lordship of Christ can be worked out in our lives, let us look at the different areas that God changes when we become Christians.
