Our blood's ability to clot is a lifesaver.f our blood cells didn't gum up and from hard little masses when we got cut or scratched, we would lose serious amount of blood or even bleed to death in the event of these and other more serious injuries. But there can be too much of a good thing.

Blood clots can be a life-threatening danger if they occur in an artery to the brain that's been narrowed by cholesterol or damaged by high blood pressure. They can cut off the brain's supply of oxygen and other nutrients carried by the blood. Just a few minutes of such blockage can permanently damage nerve cells in the brain that control mental and physical faculties, from talking to walking.

Unfortunately, strokes is all too common: It kills or disables a half-million Americans each year. However, stroke deaths are on the decline thanks to changes in lifestyle like quitting smoking or keeping one's blood pressure down. Dietary changes also play a big part in reducing the risk of stroke, particularly cutting back on high-cholesterol foods.

Add to that improved diet a daily dose and you're really on the track, because researchers have shown again and again that garlic reduces the tendency of the blood to form dangerous clots. Garlic not only actually thins the blood enhances the body's ability dissolve dangerous clots if they do form.

For centuries, the Chinese have been using as a medication to promote heart health. Their drugs 'xiebal' and 'dasuan' are composed of compounds isolated from garlic that inhibit blood clotting. Scientist in America and elsewhere have worked hard to isolate specific compounds possessing anti-platelet abilities, that is, the ability to inhibit red blood cells, also called platelets, from clotting.

Garlic expert Dr. Eric Block, who first isolated ajoene, considers it to be as effective as aspirin in preventing blood clots. In one study, subjects were given 800mg of garlic powder a day over a period of four weeks. Measurements taken from studies points out all sorts of positive results. The thickness of blood plasma decreases by 3.2 percent. There were significantly fewer blood clots. Blood circulation improves 47.6 percent.

A study in Italy found that a daily dose of 900mg of garlic powder significantly lowered blood clotting in just seven to 14 days. And researchers in the former West Germany noted that the blood-thinning effects of garlic serve the increase blood fluidity - the ability of blood to circulate efficiently. This in turn seems to have, they say, "in some way, a cleaning effect, with a 'purification' of the micro circulation."

No one knows for sure what quantities and types of garlic are most effective in improving health. Raw garlic, cooked garlic, aged garlic extract, garlic powder, garlic oils, and other preparations made from garlic all seem to be effective.

Inhibiting Blood Clots

Researchers have shown that large amounts of garlic, between 10 and 12 cloves a day, reduced the tendency of the blood to form dangerous clots. Many studies have found 800mg of garlic powder a day to be effective. Just remember that as a general rule, eating 1/2 to two cloves a day in one form or another should help enjoy garlic's overall.
