When it is easy to borrow money, and the laws of a country tend to have compassion on the debtor, the economy will prosper. In times past, when those who got too deeply into debt were thrown into prison, the economies did not grow very well. There was too much risk in borrowing.

God asks us to have compassion on those who are indebted to us. If someone needs to borrow, the Bible says in Deuteronomy 15:7-13 that we should lend freely to them without charging excessive interest, and without the assurance that we will be able to completely recover the loan.
